Why do we celebrate Navratri?

“There are 64 divine mother impulses which govern the subtle creation. These are responsible for restoring all earthly and spiritual benefits. They are simply part of one's awakened consciousness. These nine nights are celebrated to rekindle those divine impulses and celebrate the innermost depth of our lives.”

— Sri Sri Ravi Shankar

The 9th of April marks the start of the Vedic New Year, also called Chaitra Navratri (one of two Navratri's during the year, the other happening alongside the next equinox period in September - October).

This is a time to honour the Divine Mother - the womb from where all life is born.

The nine nights of Navratri is where we honour all aspects of Mother. Saraswati; wisdom and creativity, Lakshmi; the heart and abundance of life, and Kali; the one who returns you to the very truth of who you are.

Often before Chaitra Navratri we experience a 'Rashi' (often looking like things not going to plan, and a pretty uncomfortable time) which gives rise to a surge in growth of consciousness. If your world has felt topsy turvy a bit like mine in the past couple of weeks then it is precisely on time and with divine reason.

This time comes as we continue to transition between seasons, no matter whether you're in the Northern or Southern Hemisphere. The nine nights between 9-17 April, afford us an invitation to turn inward and partake in self-purification through the likes of a cleanse, fast, more meditation, and devotional and spiritual practices - one or all of the above! This could be through food, giving up your daily cup of coffee, or even staying off social media, or anywhere your attention is heavily drawn away from the Being. You might like to create an altar and offer beautiful gifts such as flowers each day. Tune in and feel into what you are called to do during this time.

If you've been bearing a heavy load lately, it is this time of heightened Mother energy that can carry this for you. Offer it up through journalling, in meditation, and your devotional practices. This time is an opening, an opportunity to connect with that which is holding us, that which supports all of life - however you understand that to be.

Jai Ma!
(Victory to the Divine Mother)
