What are we afraid of?
“Life shrinks or expands in proportion to one’s courage.”
— Anais Nin
I’ve come to find, this sense of fearlessness has made itself at home within me.
I don’t remember the last time I was truly scared. I say that knowing there are horrible and scary things happening in the world and I haven’t had to deal with fear of my life on a moment to moment basis. Yet the truth is if we take away the environment that surrounds us, that uncertainty always remains. Death is a sure thing for each and every one of us. And all fear, when stripped right down, is fear of death. Why? Death is the ultimate unknown. We don't know about it until the day it comes, and then we're not here to tell anyone about it!
This is where courage comes in to hold hands with fearlessness. When we exhibit courage, we find it much easier to accept, and with acceptance, freedom becomes familiar. Not just the freedom to do whatever you want to do, but the freedom to listen to that which the world is calling you in for.
So, it makes sense then that fearlessness, becomes the true pursuit of a human being. If fearlessness is part of your standard operating procedure, then doesn't it make sense that life becomes exciting, adventurous, and abundant?
I can’t say if I’m 100% fearless just yet, but it is one of the spontaneous by products of meditating daily. And it is (one of many reasons) why I keep meditating. When I go to that unbounded most expansive state twice daily with my eyes closed, life expands to greater proportions with my eyes open. Courage is born, and off we go on the wild journey of life.
